About Dean Family Triathlon
Mark, our race founder, has a deep passion for triathlons, having completed everything from short sprints to full-distance Ironman races. In 2022, when his son Owen expressed interest in doing a triathlon, Mark realized there wasn’t a local event designed for younger kids—especially those still using training wheels or Strider bikes. Determined to create an inclusive race for all children, he launched Bend’s only dedicated kids' triathlon. That first year, 19 kids—mostly Owen’s kindergarten classmates—took part.
Since then, the event has grown exponentially, nearly doubling in size each year. With over 100 kids ready to participate in 2025, a larger venue, and incredible local support, this year's race promises to be the biggest and best yet!
Owen now has two younger siblings, Milo and Nyla, who will be joining their big brother in the race alongside their friends. Mark’s wife, Kelly, plays a key role behind the scenes, ensuring the event runs smoothly. What started as a small gathering of friends has evolved into a beloved community tradition—one that continues to inspire and empower young athletes every year.
